  • The Higher education scenario in the country is going through a tough phase. The ever growing tuition fees have turned into a burden which many families are no longer able to afford. A number of students are fighting to survive in life with enrolling in higher education. These students are finding it extremely difficult to grab job opportunities without a degree. Having said so, does a degree guarantee a job?

Over the years, majority of the students have left no stone unturned in order to gain the best grades in their exam. Teachers, Faculty members as well as parents keep telling students about the importance of grades. However, do any of these throw light on the importance of Internships?

America has been witnessing a new trend. As far as Corporate Houses and Companies are concerned, gone are the days when candidates were selected on the basis of their grades. Today, Companies are more interested in hiring individuals who will be beneficial for the overall growth. So what are the qualities that get more importance? Why has internship become an important criteria all of a sudden?

During an internship period, the student associates with a Company like an employee would. It is the time when certain skills of the individual are tested. These skills are not tested during the exams. For instance – it is during internship program that the Company will be able to determine if the candidate is a team player. No exam in any of the current degree programs can test whether a person can be a good team member or not.

The overall temperament of the person is also tested during internship. Companies are more inclined on hiring people who are calm and composed. They usually avoid people with a short temper as it could have an adverse impact on other members of the team. The internship period also determines if the person possesses the skills to tackle a tricky situation. Companies prefer candidates who have problem solving qualities and skills.

Educational administrators and experts feel that colleges should throw more light on the importance of internship programs. They should infact look at internships as a test and start preparing students to do well in them. Today, a number of professional degree programs treat their students like working individuals. This is a great way of preparing the student for something that is in store for him/her.

Students can be divided into teams and each team can be assigned certain tasks. This exercise is important as it helps management members to identify students who are great team members and also the ones who possess natural leadership qualities.

In the last few years, it is the internship that is actually determining the fate of the individual. If he/she does well at the internship, there is every chance that the job will be awarded at the end of the period. However, this by no means states that grades have lost their importance or value.
