    DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota.     The School of Education provides highly beneficial courses and programs that contribute to the quality of life for the students and members of the Dickinson State University community and the residents of Southwestern North Dakota. Our curriculum provides the basis for a liberal arts education and cultivates an understanding and appreciation of different forms of communication and artistic and creative endeavors. Small classes and exceptional faculty help students develop and improve a wide range of skills.


    DSU is looking to hire a faculty member to teach music education and to direct the band. The purpose of the position is to teach undergraduate courses in music, which may include: Music History, Aural Skills, Instrumental Music Education, Music Theory, K-12 Music Pedagogy and other general education classes as needed.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    · Master’s degree or higher, in music or directly related field

    · All academic degrees from accredited institution(s)

    · Currently licensed in music education or were licensed in the past 10 years

    · Ability to provide exceptional teaching in the face-to-face and/or online environments

    · Experience playing and directing small and large music ensembles

    · Experience with recruiting and building positive relationships with area high school directors

    · Experience with advising students

    · Strong work ethic

    · Public speaking skills

    · Organization/prioritization abilities

    · Superior oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

    · Confidentiality and accurate record keeping skills

    · Self-motivated and self-directed

    · Demonstrated ability to use office equipment and programs including a fax, scanner, copier, and MS Office Suite, as well as the ability to adapt to the University systems and software.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    · Doctorate in music or related field

    · Successful teaching experience in undergraduate programs

    · Ability to integrate technology in educational settings, including distance delivery technologies


    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    · Provide instruction in the various courses offered by DSU.

    o Teaching effectiveness includes 1) teaching of assigned class loads, 2) making appropriate preparations for the semester including syllabus preparation, preparation of lecture, preparation of tests and assignments as needed/appropriate, revising course materials when needed, and providing measurable objectives for student performance, 3) act as a professional role model to students, 4) communicate effectively with students, 5) arrive at class punctually and use class time effectively, 6) stay current in field of expertise, 7) be available to and provide assistance to students, and 8) other teaching duties as assigned or noted by supervisor.

    o Course load each semester may involve travel to the university’s sites in Dickinson, Bismarck, Williston, and/or online.

    o Physical demands include the ability to be present in a classroom, to use the hands dexterously, and to talk and listen.

    · Direct band and other applicable ensembles

    o Direct large and small group ensembles

    o Instruct groups and individuals on all instruments

    o Recruit individuals to participate in band and other music programs

    o Physical demands are as-needed to carry out the given task but are not excessive and are largely controlled by the employee.
